Young, France. (2018), ‘Biblical reference indexing: the challenge’, The indexer, 36 (4),14-15.

In this article, the author briefed about the biblical reference indexing and the main challenges that face the indexer. The purpose of a biblical reference index is to help the readers to understand the chapters and verses of the Bible and to find out how the author makes use of the Scripture.

According to the author, the first issue regarding the template for representing the biblical reference is the different forms of Christianity, and the second issue is due to the extra-canonical books written as Scripture by early Christians. Another vital issue is with the different names of the biblical books. Furthermore, the author pointed out that the indexer has to be taken care of by the different numbering of Psalms, and that has to be taken with the Authorized Version.

In the author's point of view, the indexer has to know about the accepted abbreviations of the books of the Bible. One of the prime challenges facing a biblical reference indexer is regarding the index numbers as well as words of the Bible. In this article, the author suggested that the indexer have a bible to hand to crosscheck the book chapter and the verse numbers meant by the author in the book. The overlapping references also arise as an issue when compiling a biblical reference index. Another important issue the indexer has to face is the requirement for a certain degree of knowledge of the Bible. In the conclusion of the article, the author pointed out that there are lots of arguments in unreferenced allusions to biblical passages. But at the same time, the theological books helps to understand more about the Scriptures.

The indexer who knows about the different forms of Christianity and good knowledge about the Bible can do the biblical reference indexing comparatively better than other indexers.
